No.

There are several reasons that using just a standalone virus scanner won't 
work.  First, standalone virus scanners often can't detect viruses in 
E-mail -- they just aren't designed to do it.  Most don't know how to 
decode base64 or uuencoded segments.

The next problem is that even if they were able to detect a virus in a file 
in the spool directory and could delete it, nobody would know.  The 
sender/recipient wouldn't get notified of the virus, for example.

There are other benefits of a mail server virus scanner such as Declude -- 
for example, you can ban files based on their extension, ban CLSID 
attachments and the Outlook "CR Vulnerability", charge for scanning 
specific domains/users, use multiple scanners, and so forth.

Note that the main reason that few AV programs include the ability to scan 
E-mails is that they know that there is a big market for mail server virus 
scanning.  McAfee, for example, would much rather sell a $20,000 copy of 
WebShield SMTP than a $20 copy of VirusScan.
