Not much a delay there or below, only 1 or 2 minutes max, more like
immediate failure.

Just so you don't feel all sad and lonesome, here's a few similar
situations from a list server I manage, for today, non-exhaustive list:

51 lost connection with mailin-02.mx.aol.com[64.12.137.89] while sending HELO
32 lost connection with mx05.hotmail.com[65.54.254.145] while sending HELO
22 lost connection with mx1.mail.yahoo.com[64.157.4.81] while sending HELO
18 lost connection with smtp-gw-4.msn.com[207.46.181.13] while sending
RCPT TO
10 lost connection with mx2.mail.yahoo.com[64.157.4.88] while sending HELO
4 lost connection with bart.eskom.co.za[147.110.52.37] while sending
end of data -- message may be sent more than once

but your problem seems to be different from what we see.

Wild guessing here, but the problem seems to be on your end, since there is
a wide range of remote servers involved.

Are you going through some kind of smtp proxy or gateway or firewall?

How about tcp/ip MTU on your WAN uplink.

Coming closer to home, I would expect that Imail SMTP process reads only
the outbound msg's headers when starting an SMTP send dialogue, and when
that's complete, it goes back to the msg body from disk. Is you your
imail/spool directory being kept at unpopulated and as defragged as
possible? maybe Imail is getting screwed up by the local filesystem?

how about turning on SMTP debugging?
