FYI if you did not already know, http://www.humankindsystems.com templates have worked out great for us and very reasonably priced considering all the work involved. As a dev shop back and back in IMail v4.0 days, we considered re-writing the IMail templates too. We certainly employ the talent to do so. As a businessman and weighing costs/time compared to available third party templates out there, it was easier to part with a few bucks and also save ourselves the frustration of re-writing and keeping up with IMail upgrades.
However, from a developer side what you are proposing sounds great and hope you have time to pursue. We are playing with .Net too on some simple apps for the same reasons you list. If you guys get something put together we would be interested in seeing how it works out. It's nice to easily be able to change template specifications for the various customer domain names.
