It might be worth trying freeware DELOLD. I've used it before, and it sounds like it will do want you want.
http://www.michna.com/software.htm The last time I downloaded it, there were 2 versions -- one VB, one java. I liked the VB one because it had a pause built into it -- if you were deleting tons of files, it would delete some (35, if I remember correctly), then pause for a little while to the let the system do other things, then delete some more, etc. Maybe this will help someone!
