Howdy y'all. OK, I've got a little 1U box sitting around, since I got my cool Netscreen, that I used to use for a firewall. I just upgraded the RAM to 512 MB and put a single 80 GB ATA Hard Drive in it. It's a PIII 550 Mz. I'm presuming this should be plenty sufficient for now. The box will be used for IMail only. I currently have only about 500 users, the vast majority of whom simply have their e-mail forwarded and only several (less than a dozen as of now) use the SMTP service. Most use their dialup. Of course, alot of mail get's sent out through forms on the web server.
I'll be migrating users over this week from my web server/mail server. Right now I'm using an Access database. I'll either be switching over to the IMail database or SQL Server 2000, which I have available. I can't picture having more than 2,000 - 3,000 users any time in the foreseeable future. So, here are my questions: Pros/cons in using the IMail database vs SQL Server? I'm running IMail 6.05 now. I have a copy of 7.1 sitting here. I'd like to go with 7.1 while I'm migrating. Is it ready for prime time? If yes to above, should I install 6.05, migrate the users over, then upgrade? It looks like migrating the users over to the same version then upgrading will be pretty straight forward. Or would it be best to do a clean install of 7.1? If a clean install would be best, anyone have a link to the best migration path? Formatting the drive: Will it be best to create a separate partition for IMail? If so, how large should I make the C Drive OS partition, taking into account that I may be using the Imail database. Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for the help.
