Though I trust Len and Sandy regarding the present condition where no firewall SMTP proxies support ESMTP, is it not conceivable that a proxy *could* be made to have access to the user+password file? A dumb scenario would be to have the firewall have its own copy, manually synchronized with the original (whether it be in the registry of the mail server or in an SQL table). Or, more intelligently, getting this info through an ODBC/OLEDB/whatever link to the mail server or SQL server? Am I missing some obvious impediment which would explain why SMTP proxies cannot obtain access to the user+password data for fundamental reasons?
