it might be possible to just sever the connection btwn imgate and the mail
server, put both mail servers on the same hub, with nothing else, move
everything from server-old to server-new, then connect server-new to the
real network, all the while imgate, i would assume, would continue to just
spool the mail and hold it all until it finds the imail server again, then
it would deliver all at once, or on its next attempt to flush the queue. you
could of course do this in that downtime you have between 11:59 pm and
midnight.
actually, get everything installed on the new server first except the user
mailboxes, then that would be all you would need to do to actually
switchover, is move the mailboxes themselves in one big move operation.
The new server would be prebuilt and you can use a reg export/import to get
imail ready for the switch, but keep the new one on a hub all by itself with
the ip address it will become when you install imail, then when its all
ready, you change the ip on mailserver-old then shut it down plug it into
the hub with mailserver-new, do the mailbox move only, because remember, we
imported the registry for imail the other day, switch server-new to real
network, your done. drink the rest of your cofee and stay the night, cuz
users will inevetibly have problems the next morning, but those problems
will only occur if you tell them you are doing this, if you dont tell them,
it will be seemless.
oh, one caviat, this will work real nicely if the new imail is same
configuration as far as drives, meaning, if imail is on drive C on
mailserver-old, you would need imail on drive C for mailserver-new, or same
idea with imail on another drive like d e f, if its on the same drive for
both server, no problem, if its not planned on being the same drive, it is a
bit tricky but possible to edit the registry exports from mailserver-old,
before you import them to mailserver-new, but thats not all, on
mailserver-new, you still have to open up some of the property pages for the
domains and a couple other things i blv and redirect the drive there after
you import the modified registry, but it does work.
hope this helps you out, both options have worked for me in the past,
although i did not have imgate as a spooler at the time, so i had to just
eat about 30 minutes of downtime while the boxes were copied over and i made
changes in imail admin for the domains. I guess this would prevent users
from sending any mail for the time your doing the move

Good Luck

Don

disclaimer: not guaranteed in any way shape or form, this is a good
samaritan action only.
hehe, i just had to throw that in.
and of course, be sure to look thru IPswitches site for guidelines as well
