Are you sure it was the SMTPD32 process?
The SMTPD32 process is the "SMTP Daemon", the service that runs in the
background to accept incoming SMTP connections. As a service, there should
only be one copy of it running at any given time.
The SMTP32 (no "D") process is the process that delivers the E-mails that
the SMTPD32 process received. It is normal for there to be multiple copies
of the SMTP32 process (up to about 30 during heavy loads). However, they
rarely take up lots of CPU time -- if the SMTP32 processes are using lots
of CPU time, you should check the log file at that time to see if there are
any clues.
