A few days ago I mentioned that we were planning to add a mail test tool (I thought at the time it was going to be at http://www.DNSstuff.com , but it's actually at http://www.DNSreport.com ).
If you are having troubles sending mail to a domain (or user), you can just go to http://www.DNSreport.com and enter the domain or E-mail address in the "Mail Test" section. If you just enter a domain ("example.com"), it will show the MX record(s) for that domain, and the order that they should be used in. It will also show if there are certain errors with the MX record (such as an IP where a hostname should be, or a private IP that can't be reached, or a CNAME). If you enter an E-mail address ("[EMAIL PROTECTED]"), it will do the above, and also try connecting to the mailservers. If there are any problems connecting to the mailservers, they will be displayed (which will catch problems such as the very common problem of backup MX records not accepting mail for the domains they act as backups for, and mailservers that always respond with a "I can't accept mail right now, but will in a few minutes" ("421") message).
