Yeah, but in my experience the gateway feature empties Imail queue pretty well even 
with large amounts of mail.

Without the gateway optin, Imail freaks out when it sees 500+ messages in the queue

As we have seen with IMgate, even another SMTP server is not always the 
answer to Imail's queue processing weaknesses.  If the mail can't escape 
Imail, then your internal PMM or an external IMGate adds nothing.
