-  Make  sure  it's  not  DB-related by trying to hit a Registry-based
dummy  domain  from the same workstations seeing problems.

-  Look at the IMail logs to determine whether "failed authentication"
is  actually  logged.

-  Look at the client logs to see if it's really a just-plain-timeout,
not  a  password rejection.

- Telnet into the server to get a subjective feel of the timing.

-  Sniff  the  wire and see whether the packets look like they include
the AUTH command.

- Try multiple MUAs from the same client.
