I don't think it is the gator reference that is causing the problem.
I tried signing up for a yahoo account and joining one of the groups but did not 
receive any of their confirmation emails. A few
hours later I disabled the kill and rules lists and it worked fine. So i would have to 
say it is something with a yahoo entry in one
of the lists.
Any other ideas?
