I  don't  know  if you can say IMail "worsened" the problem, since the
behavior is by design.

The  default  delimiter  character,  as you have seen, does not detect
user  error.  If  you regularly use underscores in your usernames (let
alone hyphens), such errors may be more common.

Although  it  is  possible  to change the mailbox delimiter character,
this  can  have  unwanted effects. Instead, I'd recommend upgrading to
7.1x,  where  you  can turn off mailbox auto-creation and thus prevent
such issues.
