I have 50+ messages that are sitting in the imail/spool folder from as far back as 2/3/2003.
I'm guessing you're referring to a D*.SMD file with no matching Q*.SMD file. Those will appear in the spool directory if a "double bounce" occurs -- IMail receives an E-mail that it can not deliver, but it can't deliver the bounce message either. As a failsafe, IMail leaves it in the spool directory, so no mail gets lost.
CPU load never rises above 30% and RAM utilization is very low. Also there is only one smtpd32.exe process running any time I check the server. All of the stuck messages are labeled "D*.smd"; shouldn't there be an associated "Q*.smd" file?
That's the answer.
Those are the double-bounces. Since there is no Q*.SMD file, IMail knows to forget about the E-mail, and not try delivering it again.
