I thought that's what I gave, sorry. I had this problem also some while back and traced to Diskeeper. When Diskeeper is run in it's intelligent mode, it somehow disrupted SMTP. I changed it to manual and SMTP stopped failing.
There is a link on the forum about changing some registry settings which I found helped but didn't fix it. It just moved the failures further apart.
