but it must spawn other SMTPD instances to handle simultaneous STMP clients.
Just to clarify here (it gets technical):
IMail has an SMTPD32 process ("SMTP Daemon") that receives incoming E-mail, and stores it in the spool. There will only be 1 instance of SMTPD32.exe running at any time. It can process hundreds (thousands?) of simultaneous incoming E-mails.
IMail also has an SMTP32 process that takes care of delivering the E-mails in the spool. There is one process for each E-mail in the spool that IMail is trying to deliver, so you'll see up to about 30 of the SMTP32.exe processes. Those processes can take care of the delivery of up to about 30 E-mails at the same time (because of a Microsoft limitation).
In the case of a dictionary attack where no "nobody" alias is used, you'll see the 1 SMTPD32.exe process that handles all incoming E-mail, but you won't see any SMTP32.exe processes (related to the dictionary attack, at least). If no "nobody" alias is used, a proper dictionary attack still won't cause any E-mail to be delivered, so there would be no SMTP32.exe processes (but, it's quite possible that the spammer or his programmer is dumb, and E-mail does get delivered, in which case a lot of SMTP32.exe processes would be seen -- typically 1 for every 20 recipients).
