This is something I was thinking about the other day, regarding HELO with virtual hosts, is it not possible to make the EHLO/HELO the name of the main host so that this does not happen? This would also solve the RDNS problem as it could all be set to the same FQDN.
The short answer is there is no problem.
The longer answer is that there are HELO and REVDNS tests, but your E-mails will only fail those tests if you have DNS problems (no reverse DNS, reverse DNS that points to a hostname that doesn't resolve back to the server, or if your IMail server claims to be a host that doesn't exist). These problems will be the same whether you use IP-based domains or virtual domains.
If like us we host our own company and some client's email as well, we use a non-descript domain that isn't related to anyone as our main host.
That's fine -- just so long as the domain exists. :)
