We have the nasty ports blocked at the firewall, but I would like to just turn them off at our server as well - nt 4.0. I followed the ipswitch checklist for 7.15, made sure to leave open dns etc.
But when i turn the blocking on, mail can come in, users can login, web messaging works, but no mail gets delivered.
In the logs, it looks like imail wants to connect to itself or outgoing mail by random ports above 1024 (or thereabouts).
You can ignore those >1024 ports (those are the client-side ports). The important piece is that IMail is trying to connect to itself. Did you by any chance tell IMail to send outgoing E-mail through a gateway (if it is set to 127.0.0.1, the IP of the IMail server, or a domain name that resolves to the IP of the IMail server, it could cause the behavior you see)?
Did I set something wrong? Is this doable? Does running declude add anything to the mix? Has anyone been able to do this on an NT box - turn off all but the needed ports?
What exactly are you trying to do -- I don't believe that NT has a built-in packet filter, so I'm not sure how you are trying to close ports on it?
There is no problem closing all the ports that you do not need (although someone will point out that you need to allow client-side ports >1024, you don't have to worry about that, as packet filters will handle that automatically).
As far as Declude goes, it doesn't add anything to the mix, since it doesn't accept incoming connections, and only uses DNS for outgoing connections.
Are you sure that you are allowing port 53 (DNS) both for UDP and TCP?
