I need some advice here. I've got as user having problems with his FTP
upload to our web server and I can't figure out why. The upload is running
REALLY slow (anywhere from 3k to 15k) but download seems to be pretty good.

Is the user using an asymmetrical cable/DSL connection? For example, you may have 1.5MB download and 128K upload, which would produce a maximum upload speed of under 15K.

I'd like to use a tool to
analyze the network traffic to see if I can find a bottleneck somewhere.
What packet sniffers do folks use and can recommend? I'm a novice at this
type of stuff so I'd like something that's pretty easy to figure out.

A packet sniffer likely won't help much here -- while it will show the packets that come and go, and when they were sent, it won't be able to detect a lot of possible causes (such as a cable modem that throttles to 128K, or an FTP server saving to a drive with very slow write speeds).

If you want to use one, you might want to try out Ethereal ( http://www.ethereal.com/ ), which is free and works very well. However, be warned that it takes a lot of time to figure out how to interpret packet sniffs, how to set up useful filters, etc.
