Due to a company name change/merger I need to change the official primary hostname of our imail server. The intent is to move all old users over to the new domain, and to allow them to receive all mail sent to the old address during the transition. I have read the KB article and am comfortable on editing the registry for the the hostname change, but I am concerned with the timing of the DNS change, and the sequence to move the old users to the new domain, have their mail forwarded etc.
Is there an automated way to move the users and their existing mailboxes? I only have about 75 users that need to move. I was considering leaving the old mailboxes in place, and place a forward on each one and then use the info manager to send a autoresponse to each sender that sent mail to the old address notifying them of the change. After a period of time, hopefully when the volume of mail to the old address slows, I would delete the old boxes and old domain and add it as an alias to the new domain. Will this work and is this a good idea? Doing this I wouldn't need to make any DNS changes until I actually deleted the domain and added it as an alias...right? Any other issues or timings that I should be concerned with?
