Bite the bullet so you will have a few hard days. It will save your ass
later.

Start by notifying your users that SMTP auth will be required and send them
instructions on wher th check the box for the most common email clients.
Specify a date in the future for the cutoff and man the phones on that day.

It is easy to check the box for SMTP auth you just use your mouse.
