I am experimenting with the view to fully understand how email works and interacts. Bandwidth isn't an issue as the volume is very low as is the number of users. Although I am currently using Oultook, I am looking to use a more basic client which supports IMAP for other users.

The part of this that doesn't make sense is that you'll be downloading
the  entire  message  over the 56K line, and only then will be able to
use  IMAP's  header-based  selective  retrieval  on your local LAN. In
other words, you'll be using much more aggregate bandwidth than if you
just  got the stuff directly from the ISP over POP3. If you're using a
mail  client  (Outlook)  with  robust  support  for  local folders and
sorting  rules,  why  do you need the server-based folder structure of
IMAP?  How  many  nodes'll be getting at the message store for a given
user?
