I have a co-worker who is trying to send email to a business contact at inter.nl.net. The log file entries for the attempt show IMail trying the Primary MX, then failing, then giving up.
Actually, IMail isn't giving up:
02:03 11:02 SMTP-(04340E59) Trying inter.nl.net (0)
02:03 11:02 SMTP-(04340E59) Connect inter.nl.net [217.149.192.15:25] (1)
02:03 11:02 SMTP-(04340E59) 421 SMTP service not available, closing transmission channel
The primary mailserver is sending a "421" code, which essentially means "Please try this IP again later."
Shouldn't IMail try the 3 (in this case) other Backup MX's?
No. If IMail can't reach the primary, then it should try one of the backups. But in this case, it reached the primary, and the primary told it to try again later.
