We are using Winproxy from Ositis software. I located imail server behind
the firewall and opened up a port for pop and smtp traffic to imail server.
The only problem I have encountered is that on a random basis imail server
will stop receiving external email and I need to restart the smptpd32
service to restore external traffic (which I believe to be a Winproxy issue
at this point). Winproxy will run on any stand alone PC with winNT 4.0 or 2K
and runs as service on that PC.

Put the email server behind the firewall on the LAN side (your main
network). What kind of hardware firewall do you have. You can email me off
list if there is a security concern.

Subject: [IMail Forum] The use of a firewall

Hello

We are trying out Imail Express and I have question regarding the use of a
firewall. Our main network is currently behind a firewall and it is
intended that the Imail server will be placed 'outside' with its static IP
address. Should I rely on port blocking using TCP/IP filtering or should I
install a McAfee or Norton personal firewall? We are only a very small
office and we can't afford any more equipment. Is there a clever way of
using our current hardware firewall without compromising the internal
network?

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Steve
