According to Earthlink and RFC2821, we shouldn't be forwarding email to the
destination's A-record in the event that we can't contact one of their MX
records.

That is correct.


IMail *must* use the A record if the MX record does not exist. But IMail *must not* use the A record if the MX record exists (whether or not it can contact the hosts in teh MX record).

I'm pretty sure I've witnessed this behavior before.  Is this a
setting I can configure?

No, because if it occurs, it is a bug.


This was reported in an older version of IMail (v6 and very early v7, I believe). However, the only times that it has been reported with the latest version of IMail that I am aware of were times that IMail behaved correctly. You should make sure that you only have one DNS server listed in your IMail SMTP settings.
