Hi Evan-

We personally prefer 3ware cards - www.3ware.com

The 7006-2 is their 2 port ATA card. It looks like they're just over
$100. 7506-4 is their four port card which appears to be $250ish.

SATA requires newer SATA harddrives don't they?

I have several 40 gig and 80 gig hard drives that are ATA 66-100 that I
would like to use for the raid array. I need to do this on the less
expensive side since I already invested enough money in scsi hardware
for the machine.

As Jeffery said, Promise cards are well known. For my workstation, I
have a MB with an OB Promise EIDE ATA 133 raid controller, as well as a
Silicon Image SATA raid controller.

That brings another idea, have you looked at SATA Raid cards?
