An email was returned to me "Unknown User", which I know could mean many different things.

So I checked the logs and found the entry.
SMTP (1908) 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There were no "<" and ">", nor were there any quotation marks around the email address.

That's OK. That is just their way of displaying the address.

My first question is this: are these punctuations necessary in order to deliver email?

Those are handled by the mail client and mail server. It is not causing the problem here.

What you want to do is check the IMail log files to make sure that it is sending to an IP in the MX record for the domain. If it is not, the problem is probably on your end. If it is, the problem is almost certainly on their end.
