Unfortunately, you're stuck -- you want WebShield to run before IMail, which means that IMail won't see the IP of the remote mailserver (you have a choice of it seeing 127.0.0.1 if WebShield runs on the same server, or the internal IP if it runs on another server).
Since you already have anti-spam software in your setup, you may want to use it instead of the IMail v8 anti-spam.
Thanks for your reply however the anti-spam software we have currently
only allows smtp traffic to be dropped if it originates from an IP found
in the blackhole list, the A-S software on IMail seems to be so much
more than that with baynsian filtering etc as well as the blackhole
checking I'd prefer to use the larger feature set than the smaller.

In that case, I would recommend using both. Your current anti-spam software can drop connections based on the IP, and IMail v8's anti-spam can do its content filtering. We occasionally have customers that want to use one of the IMail v8 anti-spam features in addition to our Declude JunkMail, and they will just enable both programs.

What about the other option of having the IMail server block or receive
the mail using its A-S ruleset before passing it off to a desktop
scanner module (I believe this is how earlier versions of IMail handled
the problem before the integrated, extra cost, scanner) to be scanned
and then passed back to the mail store for delivery?

You could write your own filters, but that gets to be a lot of work. I have first-hand experience with this -- every once in a while when someone orders our software, they complain a few days later that they never got it. It turns out they did something silly like added a filter to block all E-mail with the word "order" in it.
