Whenever we need to shutdown MySQL (quite rare) we turn off all IMail services first. Assuming the shutdown is only for a few minutes at most, it's actually better than leaving the mail server running, because this way no mail gets bounced. Usually other mail servers sending email to our server will just try resending again if there is no response (depending on their retry settings.)
We always turn the db on first, IMail second and have no problems reconnecting.

I see you are a fellow user of MySQL with IMail. I have a quick question for you. Do you have your MySQL server on a different machine, and if so do you suffer from the problem of when the MySQL server is stopped, than IMail starts rejecting mail because it can't contact the DB, and doesn't start a new connection with the db even after MySQL is restarted?
