First, let me mention that I'm keeping this on-list because I don't
think that, in practical terms, Exchange and IMail are really rival
products. I've definitely thought otherwise in the past, but at this
point it just comes down to cost. If one of our clients wants to
spring for Exchange as a mailbox platform, including not just user
licenses but the monstrous hardware costs required to make it hum, we
just don't fight it anymore (although we _do_ stipulate that IMail
with Declude must be left as the anti-spam solution); until the IMail
Bynari connector is out, we think the groupware difference is beyond
debate.
Anyway, back to the question at hand. The answer is that there are
neither Ipswitch-, Microsoft-, nor third-party tools specifically
designed to translate between the products. You really have two
choices: (1) download MBXs via POP3 into <username>.PST files, and
Exmerge the PSTs into the IS; or (2) try to use the IMAP4-to-PST
feature of Exmerge, which frankly looks wonderful but which I've never
been able to get working (you'd have to do some work with the AD
schema to generate the right "answer file" format, but I know not
what).
The good news is that if your mailbox server's IP stays the same and
you are stretched thin, you should be able to do a less stressful
piecemeal migration by enabling the POP3 gateway on the Exchange box
and letting users connect using their current SMTP/POP3 settings until
you install the Exchange service on each machine. (As you go through
machine-by-machine, you Exmerge the PSTs up to the server and remove
the PST from the profile.)
