254 is the IP limitation. But it will slow your machine down to an extent. We had about 30 on a server that was doing backup services (in case web or radius went down it had the IP of every web server we had), the only problem I ran into was DNS was listening on all 30 IPs and shut down. So if you install DNS make sure its only listening on 1 or 2 IPs.
