I agree, and usually I don't try anything clever with the DNS settings. But the need is real. We do NOT want to change the IP of the DNS server (which a couple of other responses discussed). We want to be able to take the same IP to a different machine, with a different name.
Let me ask this: when mail servers talk to each other, they give their names and that can (or will someday) be important. Does is matter if the DNS server's reported name doesn't match the claimed (DNS A record) name? Rather than use an alias, we could just create a regular A record, such as dns1 pointing to x.x.x.x, which could be an IP address assigned to some server, such as "Server6" (which is the name it reports when queried). There must be some standard way to do this. Otherwise, every time you replace your DNS server (with a machine with a new name), you'd have to reset all the registration records for any managed zones.
