A couple of months ago I had asked about tools or tips to convert our
student Imail accounts to Exchange accounts but after much internal
discussion it has been decided to scrap this idea for several reasons.
We have thus decided to stay with Imail for a while and will be
upgrading to 8.12.

My question now has to do with converting Imail NT to external SQL
database for account management. When we started with Imail many years
ago, it made sense to use the NT database for account management as it
suited our purposes at the time. This no longer suits our purposes and
actually now interferes with some of the technology plans we have for
providing IT services to students. What I am now looking at is the
viability of using an external SQL database for user accounts and want
to convert our current NT based student accounts to an external SQL
database. Would the option of converting to Imail internal then using
some of the tools available to convert that to external SQL or are there
methods to directly export the accounts and use the data to create a SQL
database. I know passwords won't be exported but we have a solution for
the password issue.

Has anybody done this or anyone that can point me to some documentation
or a discussion of the pros and cons of such an endeavour?

I should add that we are also using our Imail server with Declude as a
very cost effective gateway and for anti-spam anti-virus protection to
our staff/faculty Exchange 2003 server. This will remain, but by moving
to an external database for Imail I will be able to move Imail off of
the Domain Controller and therefore removing its exposure.
