I don't agree with that. Especially with ODBC userbases, the resource savings can be quite phenomenal.
but doesn't Imail keep a copy of the users in registry even when using an external db? if not, I can see where an external db query for recipients would be murderous.
However, I do agree with your conclusion that, since reactive IP blocking is getting more and more hopeless, offloading the entire userbase lookup to another machine (and I prefer LDAP) is optimal.
The MXs must have their own local recipient db, so they do not pass dictionary attack queries for recipients straight through to any backend server.
