A realistic target, since Ipswitch doesn't look to be adding this
function _by design_ anytime soon, could be setting up an MTA for
which your domains are considered remote

Making an IMail SMTPD process listen on the "mail submission" port 587 can't be an architectural overhaul to the current SMTPD process. No white/black listing, no relay for addresses, no extraneous E-SMTP stuff, just the bare minimum SMTP enhanced services. Impossible to abuse, and allows mail clients on (eg, bellsouth) networks that block port 25 outbound to submit.

--thus implicitly requiring
authentication for everyone--

A port 587 service that knows nothing about domains, so every SMTP client must authenticate before submitting. I set this up for my IMGate clients now.

thus allowing users to use the exact same simple username and password

... an absolute requirement, not a nicety or convenience.
