took out an old Pentium box and tossed Linux and Postfix/IMGate on it, and basically obscured our mail server from the rest of the world. As the Postfix box does nothing but relaying, it does a pretty good job.
1M/86K = 12 rejects/second on 24-hour avg. Not bad at all.
I've seen an IMGate 850 MHz PC do 20 rejects/second of unknown user with no noticeable delay for legit mail, looking up known users in a local b-tree hash file.
