FYI, Queue Listen Pipes have nothing to do with DNS Blacklist checks. Mike Barber Software Tester Ipswitch Inc.
-----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Dave Riddle Sent: Wednesday, August 18, 2004 1:50 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [IMail Forum] Queue Listen Pipes I had kept my "Queue Listen Pipes" at the default of 4 for many years, But ever since aggressively using the anti-spam filters I have seen that the amount of time it takes to process an email (check it against 8 spam databases) is taking an long time - sometimes is will be as long as ten minutes before it finishes (one minute between blacklist lookups!). See example below. I boosted the Queue pipes from 4 to 10 this morning and it did not seem to make any difference. I am also going to evaluate the effectiveness of the blacklist tests we are using over the next day or so - I will report back to the list what I find to see about dropping any that aren't helping. So the question is what do most of you have this Queue Pipes" setting configured for? Server is running pretty low on "free" memory and the CPU is running at about 20% on average. This is an older box and maybe the solution is to upgrade the hardware. Example (with Queue Listen Pipes = 4 with "lots" of lines snipped out that deal with other emails) ----------------------- 08:18 05:59 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (SpamCop:*:bl.spamcop.net) 08:18 06:00 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (SpamCop:*:bl.spamcop.net) 08:18 06:00 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (List:*:list.dsbl.org) 08:18 06:01 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (List:*:list.dsbl.org) 08:18 06:01 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (ahbl:*:dnsbl.ahbl.org) 08:18 06:02 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (ahbl:*:dnsbl.ahbl.org) 08:18 06:02 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (njabl:*:dnsbl.njabl.org) 08:18 06:03 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (njabl:*:dnsbl.njabl.org) 08:18 06:03 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (spamhaus:*:sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org) 08:18 06:04 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (spamhaus:*:sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org) 08:18 06:04 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (Blitzedall:*:opm.blitzed.org) 08:18 06:05 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (Blitzedall:*:opm.blitzed.org) 08:18 06:05 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (ORDB:*:relays.ordb.org) 08:18 06:06 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (ORDB:*:relays.ordb.org) 08:18 06:06 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: connecting to service (DSBLMulti:*:multihop.dsbl.org) 08:18 06:07 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> BLACKLIST: 208.195.160.175 was not found on list (DSBLMulti:*:multihop.dsbl.org) 08:18 06:07 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> VALIDATION: (MAIL FROM) microworks.net validating MAIL FROM address [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08:18 06:07 SMTPD(52bb02d800f6b7f1) [00000792] <microworks.net> VALIDATION: (MAIL FROM) microworks.net SUCCEEDED for user [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) Got Content Filter for microworks.net 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) scanning the subject for phrases 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) scanning the body for phrases 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) performing statistical analysis 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) The following words were used to compute the probability email is spam 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = jason, probability = 0.010000 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = racers, probability = 0.969030 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = tuesday, probability = 0.033294 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = original, probability = 0.044816 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = mike, probability = 0.050728 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = august, probability = 0.054141 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = thanks, probability = 0.058789 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = posted, probability = 0.063199 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = ohio, probability = 0.106717 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = thank, probability = 0.119918 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = yet, probability = 0.119950 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = change, probability = 0.122161 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = anything, probability = 0.123438 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = mid, probability = 0.127906 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) word = help, probability = 0.129557 08:18 06:07 SMTP(52bb02d800f6b7f1) probability email is spam 0.000000: email is good -------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/
