Well, I don't believe the filenames are "indefensible," let alone "insanity," or "idiocy." They're an eensy-weensy, near-negligible example of a big problem in IT. Your naming suggestions are certainly improvements, but the problem here was really a lack of literacy on all our parts with a tiny quirk of IMail. Compared to all of the other quirks you have to keep track of with most software, this is nothing. Note that _any_ of the IMail logfile names can be completely customized by Kiwi Syslog or a similar package, splitting POP3 logs by domain, splitting W2 logs by auth failures, etc. The less often people parse their logs with some sense of forensic urgency, the less they care about naming conventions.
