I did what you recommended as well as checked out the Mozillazine forums, they had me get the latest nightly build which still didn't do anything, so I had to roll back to 0.73.
It's a big enough problem out there considering how many people use Thunderbird, and how many also use Imail... Hopefully they'll get it resolved soon. I had a similar problem after this upgrade with POP3. I re-read the release notes, and they say to completely remove the program directory for .73 before installing .8. They say that if you don't do that, you will have problems.
