This is one of the kludgiest of kludges, but here goes:
- set up MS SMTP somewhere on their LAN
- configure MS SMTP to allow the copier's internal IP to relay (I am
forced to assume it has a static _internal_ IP, even if the router has
a dynamic external IP)
- set up your mailserver as MS SMTP's smarthost, and configure
outgoing authentication ('Outgoing Security' in ISM)
- have the copier gateway through MS SMTP

It's depressing that you have to negotiate at all with a rep who makes
such suggestions. He's doing a disservice even to Microsoft, who have
not been shipping an default-open relay for years.
