Bruce, Thanks much for passing this info along. This has always been one of those nagging Imail mysteries that no one (especially Ipswitch) has ever been able to explain.
Regarding VisNetic, I am certainly one of those admins who considers using challenge/response an administrative "evil", but I will not condemn their particular mail server software for simply offering it as an option. As we all know, Imail has some equally "stupid" options, like allowing open relay to everyone, rejecting messages with null sender, creation of mail loops via away messages and mailing lists, etc. I think that it is the responsibility of each mail admin to know what they are doing, and I hold them responsible for any actions taken by their servers, rather than blaming a software vendor for simply offering a setting as an option, no matter how stupid. Let's face it, an "autoreply" message can do just as much damage as C/R, if an admin or user is incompetent regarding its use. IMHO, it is a poor admin who blames his software for problems caused by using settings without fully understanding their meaning, or the implications of their use. Anyone who can't hack (no pun intended) maintaining a mail server on the internet without causing others damage needs to go back to using AOL.
