Do you (your customer) think it likely that a real spammer would reveal the application he used to send the spam? They lie about just about everything else in the header...and your customer expects that they would tell the truth about the sending application? LOL!!!
Any X field is not a required field, so the sender does not even "have" to send X-Mailer! Those that do, have their own reasons for doing it (OK, one use could be to verify the sending app) and it involves a certain amount of "trust" when evaluating the field. But from what I just said, how much would you trust it? Should your customer trust it more than you? (I hope you can convince him otherwise!)
