Thanks for the clarification, here's the setup, forgive me if this is convoluted. Inbound mail to mail.boral.com comes into 207.100.51.6 (mailfrontier gateway - no outbound capabilities). It then passes to an internal Exchange server. Outbound mail comes from Exchange, to IMail (207.100.51.46) and is then sent to the recipient domain. What is happening, obviously, is that when sending out, IMail is announcing itself as mail.boral.com with an IP of .46, but the reverse DNS for mail.boral.com is pointing to .6, the host record.
That could be a problem. From an Internet standpoint, if mail.boral.com points to .6, then only .6 should have a reverse DNS entry of mail.boral.com -- and only applications running on .6 should identify themselves as being mail.boral.com.
That has to stay intact, or inbound mail will route to IMail and will not have the spam filtering from Mail Frontier. IMail is failing the reverse DNS lookups. If we added a pointer for .46 to point to mail.boral.com, then it would still fail, because that doesn't match the existing host record of .6.
Correct.
I'm not really sure of how to go about fixing this problem, and it will be a couple months before Mail Frontier has outbound SMTP capabilities. I guess we could either ditch Mail Frontier, but my boss is
n't going to go for that, and if we had Exchange send out directly, we'd be in the same boat. Any ideas on working around this mess?
This could get tricky, depending on what information is already out there.
You could change mail.boral.com to point to .46 (and change the MX record for boral.com to point to something like gateway.boral.com, which points to .6).
Or, you could change the IMail server to identify itself as something else, such as imail.boral.com (with an A record pointing to .46). But, that might not be so easy to do.
