Subject: [IMail Forum] OT: Not Imail per se but Imail user needing help w/ spf using JHSoft's SimpleDNS
I'm struggling with spf setup. I thought I had it good to go but tested at
dnsstuff.com which found no spf text. I also don't understand the IP entry
necessity. I entered the two IP's that the mail server uses. When I tested
at dnsstuff.com, though, it looks like it really wants originating IP's. We
restrict by SMTP Auth not IP and haven't an inkling where our email users
might be connecting from--nor do we care. I thought spf was to insure that
mail purporting be be from, for example, [EMAIL PROTECTED] had to have come
through a server that is allowed to send for centric.net. That, coupled
with SMTP Auth would insure no spoofing. Why, then, does the originating IP
matter?
Another thought: so, if one of our users is connected via an ISP that
requires that SMTP traffic go through their server so mail from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is sent from, for example, mail.bresnan.net that's going
to be a problem, right?
Am I totally missing something? The way I'm understanding things as of now
makes spf seem impractical and unusable for anyone using any web based mail
or hosting email with one provider and connecting with another making it
unusable as a validation tool.
I'm also unsure if I'm entering the other info for the spf.pobox.com wizard
correctly for the DNS software I'm using which is SimpleDNS 4.
In short: I'm totally confused now. If anyone would be inclined to lend expertise I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Katie
