Quoting "Dan Mahoney, System Admin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Is there a tool that can "repair" this type of thing?

-Dan

is this mbx or unix mbox? if it's mbx, there is a brute force fixer on sourceforge at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/mbxuncorrupter

it is very brute force, but it does work. read the docs, turn on the verbose output, etc. you'll eventually get a working mailbox file and a second file with the unusable message parts in it.

If it's not mbx, this tool does nothing for you.
