Next, if you have a large user community, do you really want a single directory with 10,000...100,000...1,000,000 files in it??
I quite agree. That's why I modified the UW imap code to use user homedirs for INBOX files and modified procmail to deliver to user's homedirs. It was done to alleviate my original server set up of one disk per set of users (rather than RAID5). Having mail delivered to user's homedir made a performance difference.
