I quite agree w/ Mark. We started off as a one server shop where file and mail service resides. But as the load and I/O demands went up, I gradually split our services so that individual servers are dedicated to individual tasks. The reason was because IMAP is so I/O intensive and sometimes memory intensive AND it's not that hard splitting off services. We're still a unix shop and we really didn't have to make too many changes to our account management scripts to make this work.

However, for large sites, you have to give up interoperability with traditional UNIX mail software. UW imapd lets you do it gradually and incrementally, while Cyrus forces the issue.

Exactly, that's why I'm going with UW for now. Right now there is one easy way to create user accounts, even with two different servers (one mail and one file). I didn't want to deal w/ the massive change I have to do to my scripts to make Cyrus work......
