The problem with using any command line parameters in the distribution version of imapd is that certain obscure authentication mechanisms use the command line for their own purposes. Fortunately, it's easy enough to patch the source with the code that you want.

It's not likely that there will be many updates to UW IMAP. Since I left last May, UW has made only a handful of changes:
        c-client/mail.h         - change version number
        c-client/rfc822.c       - one bugfix
        c-client/smtp.c         - one bugfix
        dmail/dmail.c           - one bugfix
        imapd/imapd.c           - IDLE code shuffle for checkpointing
        tmail/tmail.c           - two bugfixes
