"Dual-use" patches to flat file formats create a break in the name space between the UNIX filesystem and IMAP mailbox names. This, in turn, breaks the use of UNIX shell tools and scripts which deal with mailbox files. "Dual-use" mailboxes also make life a lot harder for users of clients which comply with the IMAP standard.
