You're confusing a protocol and an interoperable protocol.
I'm not. I'm saying X and Y aren't protocols in the same sense of the word.
Both are protocols, a protocol is just another word for "format of bits on the wire".
My dictionary disagrees with you. Personally I don't have an opinion.
